Antique Butter Churn Plunger Thingie ???

Not sure what this is or how old, but I think it's the plunger for some type of butter churn. It's about 4' tall and the base is about 5" in diameter. If someone can identify this for me please let me know exactly what this is. Am I very far off with my assessment?
